| How to Correctly Charge Your Batteries |
|---|
| Battery experts and battery manufacturers recommend that deep-cycle lead-acid batteries be charged with a three step charge sequence to provide a fast, accurate charge.   The TRUECHARGE line of chargers follows this recommended sequence:
Step 1 - Bulk Charge - The battery is charged at full rated output current of the charger until the battery reaches its final charging voltage, known as the absorption voltage.   This step replaces 70-80 % of the battery's capacity at the fastest possible rate. Step 2 - Absorption Charge - When the battery reaches the absorption voltage, the charging current is steadily decreased while the battery voltage is maintained at the absorption voltage.   This step replenishes the remaining 20-30% of capacity. Step 3 - Float Charge - When the charge is fully replenished, charger voltage is reduced below the battery absorption voltage and is held constant.   This prevents battery damage that would occur if the voltage was maintained at the absorption voltage yet still allows the charger to supply current to make up for self-discharge losses in the battery.   The charger also supplies current to loads connected to the battery, reducing battery drain. |
| Microprocessor Controlled for Accurate Charging   Microcomputer software, developed in cooperation with battery experts from industry and government labs, constantly monitors and regulates the voltage and current delivered to the battery.   Computer control eliminates both mechanical components, such as timers which can wear out, and complex analog electronic circuits which can easily drift out of specification as they age.   With TRUECHARGE microprocessor control, you get years of accurate charging without risk of battery damage or overcharging. |
| User Friendly   User-friendliness and ease of operation set the TRUECHARGE chargers apart from the competition.   Advanced power switching technology results in compact chargers that are light and easy to install.   TRUECHARGE chargers are quiet.   There is none of the 'buzz" common to older technology chargers to disturb you.   A bar graph display gives you an easy-to-read indication of charging current, and individual indicator lights clearly show charge status.   Simple switches allow you to quickly set up your TRUECHARGE for different battery types and charging conditions. |
| Worry-Free Charging Anytime, Anywhere
TRUECHARGE is a true "connect-and-forget" charger.   Once the TRUECHARGE has completed its charging cycle, it drops its output to a safe "float" voltage to maintain the battery's charge.   The TRUECHARGE precisely maintains the correct charging voltage for your battery over a wide input voltage range.   Your batteries get the charge they need even if you must charge from a poorly regu4ated AC source such as a generator or marina dockside power.   Built in surge protectors keep the charger and the DC circuits safe from surges and spikes on the AC power line.
Many other multi-step chargers are easily "fooled" into delivering an improper charge which can damage your batteries.   For example, many multi-step chargers detect completion of the charging cycle when charging current drops below a threshold value.   These chargers will keep charging indefinitely at a dangerously high charging voltage if a load connected to the battery draws more than this threshold current.   TRUECHARGE's microprocessor isn't fooled as easily.   It monitors charging voltage, current, and time, to make a truly smart decision about when to stop charging.   The smart choice for worry-free charging is TRUECHARGE | More Power for Faster Charging |
|---|
| TRUECHARGE battery chargers deliver their full rated charging current for most of the charging cycle.   The chargers only reduce their charging current below their rated continuous amperage when the battery is approaching full charge.   Computer control of charging current ensures the fastest possible charge without risk of damage.   In fact, TRUECHARGE battery chargers actually charge batteries faster than many older-technology taper chargers with twice the rated output! |
| What Happens If Your Batteries Aren't Charged Correctly |
|---|
|
Most chargers on the market today aren't true three step chargers. Here's what can happen to your expensive batteries when you don't use a multi-step smart charger on a regular basis:
a) Taper chargers - Simple ferroresonant chargers deliver current at a diminishing rate as the battery voltage rises during charging until the current tapers to zero at a certain voltage.   Unfortunately, there is no single voltage that allows the charger to remain connected and at the same time ensures a full charge.   If the voltage is set above a safe float voltage, the battery will be overcharged and may suffer damage from boiled-off electrolyte in the long run.   If the voltage is set at or below the float voltage, the battery will never be fully charged and may actually suffer permanent loss of capacity. b) Timer-based chargers - These chargers are taper chargers with a user adjustable timer which turns the charger off, or sets it to a lower voltage, after a preset time.   The final charging voltage is typically set above a safe float voltage.   These chargers work reasonably well if the timer is set properly.   The user must properly set the timer depending on how much the battery has been discharged.   These are definitely not "connect-and-forget" chargers! c) Two-step chargers - These chargers typically charge at a constant current until the battery reaches a preset voltage and then the charger voltage is reduced to a safe float voltage.   Two problems can occur.   If the preset voltage is at or below the battery absorption voltage, then the loss of the absorption charging step will result in an undercharged battery.   If the preset voltage is above the absorption voltage, then the battery will be overcharged. Repeated overcharging will cause loss of electrolyte and eventual battery damage. The risk that constant voltage, timer-based, and two-step chargers pose to your batteries is clear.   If you value your batteries and want to maintain their performance, the fast, accurate, and worry-free charging provided by TRUECHARGE is essential. |
| Protect the Environment - Keep your Batteries longer |
|---|
| Every year, thousands of batteries are thrown away due to damage caused by inadequate chargers.   TRUECHARGE ensures that batteries are maintained properly, which greatly prolongs their life.   This saves you money and reduces the need to recover and recycle discarded batteries. |
| The Charger Output Ratings Game - How some manufacturers rate their chargers |
|---|
| The continuous rating of the TRUECHARGE chargers provide an accurate measure of the charging current available.   Many other chargers only deliver their rated charging current for a short initial part of the charge producing significantly less current than their rated output over most parts of the charge.   Many industry experts feel that these rating practices are misleading.   Look closely at the specifications of other chargers - If they talk about "derated" charge output, or show graphs of tapering charge current over time in bulk mode, you'll know that their ratings are decidedly optimistic!
A TRUECHARGE charger with a similar rating to a typical taper charger will charge your batteries much faster.   For example, the TRUECHARGE 10 will charge batteries faster and more accurately than 20 and 30 amp rated taper chargers!! The future of battery charging is here today with the TRUECHARGE line of affordable deep-cycle battery chargers.   Providing a fast, accurate charge for any marine, industrial or RV deep-cycle battery, no other battery charger on the market today gives you more value and performance than TRUECHARGE.   The deep-cycle batteries used in today's vehicles and boats need proper charging to deliver their rated performance and lifetime.   Maximum battery performance is a necessity to meet the increased demand placed on electrical systems from electronic and electrical accessories.   The simple taper charge and timed-charge battery charger designs of the past do not meet todays demanding requirements. Statpower's experience in advanced power conversion technology brings high-end, multi-step battery charging performance into a price range that you can afford.TRUECHARGE battery chargers are the first family of chargers to incorporate the features found in expensive smart battery chargers at a price comparable to many lower performance taper chargers.   Advanced microcomputer control improves charger performance while actually making the charger easier to use.   You no longer have to make the choice between risking battery damage due to inadequate charging performance or laying out large amounts of money for a complicated smart charger.   Whether you need to recharge large capacity batteries, keep them topped up, or charge different battery types, Statpower's TRUECHARGE battery chargers are the ideal choice. |
